No live-action movie has come from DC since the Justice League last year, and that film suffered a great deal of critical and box-office disappointment which led to several changes. New management has taken over DC, directors have been changed, and it is also possible that some top actors might not reprise their roles. Still, there is some rejuvenated hope that a more confident direction is being created for the DC films. The new era of DC movies starts in December when Aquaman releases in theatres, and it would have been over a year since any DC film released. However, Aquaman’s release will see many other DC films release within a year. Let us take a look at the upcoming movies, and find out what all projects have been confirmed and what others are rumored.
CONFIRMED: WONDER WOMAN 84
This is one film that everyone is looking forward to. It is beyond doubt that Wonder Woman has become core to the DC movies and that is greatly due to the superb financial and critical success achieved by her debut movie. The mystery about Wonder Woman 1984 is its setting which is during the Cold War era.
CONFIRMED: BIRDS OF PREY
The announcement of the Birds of Prey film means that it will explore the various inhabitants of Gotham City. The film is going to be the first all-women team-up movie, and it might not feature the Batman. It will be refreshing to see the Gotham characters without the Dark Knight. The other attraction about this film is Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie.
Joker might the most interesting film as well as a gamble from DC. Some fans were delighted to hear about it while others were skeptical. This is the first time, a film is going to pay detailed attention to the Clown Prince of Crime, and it is also interesting to see that Joaquin Phoenix is going to play the character instead of Jared Letto. Let us wait and watch whether the cinegoers are ready to watch two different Joker versions simultaneously or not.
CONFIRMED: THE FLASH
There have been countless rumors over the years about a Flash movie, including a Flashpoint film to a Flash/Green Lantern crossover movie. Finally, a Flash film has been finalized, and it is expected to start filming early next year with Ezra Miller playing the lead role.
This film is expected to be an out-and-out solo Flash movie without featuring any other DC heroes. Let’s see how it goes for him as The Flash has already been in three DC movies, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League.
CONFIRMED: THE BATMAN
This again is a strange situation where a Batman film is expected to film next year, but, we have no idea who will play the character. While Ben Affleck has been the DCEU Batman until now, there have been a lot of rumors about his exit recently, and the studio hasn’t confirmed whether he will continue playing the Batman. We also don’t know anything about the villain, and we are sure this movie will make a lot of news in the months ahead.
RUMORED: GREEN LANTERN
Green Lantern is a major DC superhero missing from DCEU. While there were rumors of a possible cameo in Justice League, that didn’t happen. However, the absence might be due to the 2011 movie Green Lantern which was a terrible disaster. According to rumors, a new Green Lantern film might feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and Tom Cruise is likely to play Hal Jordan. As of now, it is all speculation.
There was a time when Joss Whedon was going to make a Batgirl film, but, that is not the case anymore. However, rumors about a Batgirl film continue even now. Since Barbara Gordon is not going to be a part of the Birds of Prey film, it is being suggested that she might be featured in a solo. Batwoman is coming to the Arrowverse this year, and it might not be long before we see the character on the big screen too.
The latest rumors indicate that Supergirl will get a solo movie. It is quite surprising since Supergirl is already doing well as a TV show and also the fact that she is being considered for a film and not her cousin, Superman. If this film is made, it will be Supergirl’s second outing on the big screen. No matter what, Warner Bros. would want this film to do as well as the Wonder Woman if it is made.
RUMORED: SUICIDE SQUAD 2
Despite Suicide Squad being ridiculed by critics, the film has been a part of the rumors because it made a lot of money at the box office. While it might not have lived up to the buzz for many, it did get some extra publicity courtesy of its Oscar win. As stated previously, Margot Robbie’s work in the movie was loved by all.
RUMORED: GOTHAM CITY SIRENS
Here is a project which is losing hype after the initial reports that the film was to be directed by the Suicide Squad maker, David Ayer. However, no further details emerged. Now that the Birds of Prey film is being made, we wonder if this project has been shelved. However, the director had recently tweeted an image featuring him with Paul Dini (the writer of Gotham City Sirens), leading to speculation that the film might be getting greenlighted soon.
