Superheroes have been our favorite icons for generations and for a number of decades, a non-stop rivalry has been going on between DC and Marvel Comics for supremacy in the world of printed superhero comic books. While DC has the early bird advantage and some of the most iconic superheroes like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman (the big trinity of DC), Marvel has the contemporary heroes who have become extremely popular courtesy of the movies and TV shows.

However, when we talk of the Marvel comics, it is appreciable how it has innovated and come up with unexpected and unimaginable scenarios. During the last few years, Marvel picked up some of its most popular and legendary heroes and created mashed up versions which led to the creation of unforeseen new heroes and refreshing versions of the well-known characters.

These incredible, yet crazy mash-ups infused new life into characters which were lying obsolete and in the process, brought forward some of the most fascinating moments in the contemporary Marvel comics history. Although this kind of approach has grown greatly in the recent works from Marvel such as the currently running Fresh Start initiative. Marvel comics has been merging its characters in some way or the other, for a long time in its major stories and the ignored alternate worlds. Despite such mash-ups failing to work at times, they have resulted in the type of stories which only Marvel Universe can tell.

In this article, we will look at some of the mash-up characters by Marvel who turned out to be even better than the characters they were inspired by, and others who failed to match up to the characters which they were based on. To create this list, we have focused on new characters which were created by merging two or more long-term characters. The long-term characters who have been revamped or have taken a new identity will also be considered and also some of the characters from alternate realities. However, this is all about Marvel so there won’t be any character from the comics where a crossover between Marvel and DC characters was done.
