The trailer for Avengers: Endgame released at the Super trailer has generated a whole lot of conspiracy theories since many of the eagle-eyed fans had noticed a few shots that where it seems to have been edited for removing characters from the video. We have broken down all the missing characters and who they may be, but for a few viewers, there is nothing to actually speculate about.
A few MCU fans do not believe that there is anything unusual and suspicious about the Avengers: Endgame TV spot scenes and they believe that everything is just as it is meant to be. This is a pretty fair argument, except that it actually ignores the entire history of Marvel Studios and their habit of editing key character from the trailers.
First. in the photo collage that is making the rounds on Reddit is from the film, Thor: Ragnarok. In the trailers that had been set to Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song” we had seen Chris Hemsworth’s character unleash his full Thunder god powers on Hela, with his eyes that are ablaze with electricity-“Eyes,” mind you it is in the plural. In the film, however, the fans learnt that the trailer had been covering up a huge secret-Hela cuts out one of Thor’s eyes. It had been a very crucial detail that aligned Thor closer with his father, Odin.
The film, Captain America: Civil War had used a few of their trailers for teasing the moment of conflict, as Captain America’s team had come face-to-face with Iron Man’s team. The very same trailers and promos had tailored the footage to conceal a huge surprise in the movie-the debut of MCU’s Spider-Man. Not only was the character, removed from all the shots of Iron Man’s team lining up for battle – the shot that had been used in trailers had moved Black Widow closer to War Machine to conceal the space where Spider-Man should have been.
The trailers for Avengers: Infinity War had a whole lot of editing tricks and had concealed a lot of details from the fans. The comparison references the scene where Captain America had faced Thanos with all the Infinity Stones. However, Thanos’ Infinity Stones had been edited out of many of the shots in the trailers – and whereas a few other MCU films have edited characters, Infinity War had edited a whole team of characters into a “Battle of Waknda” shot that never really existed in the film.
In the trailer of Age of Ultron, Quicksilver, Vision and Scarlet Witch had been missing in the scene where the Avengers had assembled for the huge money shot.
Joe Russo had this to say regarding the MCU trailers:
“We use all the material that we have at our disposal to create a trailer. We look at the trailer as a very different experience than the movie, and I think audiences are so predictive now that you have to be very smart about how you craft a trailer because an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what’s gonna happen in the film. We consume too much content. So at our disposal are lots of different shots that aren’t in the movie that we can manipulate through CG to tell a story that we want to tell specifically for the purpose of the trailer and not for the film.”
Avengers: Infinity War is now available on home video. Upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies include Captain Marvel on March 8th, Avengers: Endgame on April 26th, and Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5th.
