While the previous versions of the character had just mild adaptations of the iconic costume, the latest version featuring Tom Holland apparently changes his costume with each new film. We are sure that things will not be any different for Spider-Man: Homecoming as well.
Looking from a neutral point of view, there is a basic need why the change should be there: merchandise. The introduction of a new costume would mean the sale of an entirely new toy line. That is important for any superhero, but, when it comes to Spider-Man, it assumes even more significance for Marvel. According to the deal that they have with Sony, Marvel doesn’t earn any money from the box office success of a Spider-Man movie or its distribution, but, their revenue comes from merchandise, and that’s why Marvel is keen to change Spider-Man’s costume whenever they can (taking into account the fact that he is the most loved hero in the world of toys, that too by a great distance).
The fire has now been stoked by Louise Frogley, a costume designer who has worked on films like Iron Man 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man & the Wasp. She told India West: “I am not actually working on that film, but the costumes will have very big changes because, in the film, Spider-Man becomes more like man and not teenager.” Although she confessed to not being an internal source, but, a new suit for Spider-Man in the upcoming movie is logical and gives a few fascinating opportunities for the superhero in future.
Barring his first, Scarlet suit that he made at home, as of now Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man has been using the services of Tony Stark as his fashion designer. However, things are set to change after Avengers 4 as everybody is speculating that to be the last MCU outing for Robert Downey Jr and viewers are of the opinion that Tony Stark will have to sacrifice his life to undo Thanos’ finger snap. These speculations are strengthened by the revelation that Iron-Man won’t be a part of the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. It was obvious that Downey’s appearance in the Spider-Man series was a one-shot deal, but, there is another Marvel Cinematic Universe hero who might help the web-slinger against Mysterio.
In case, there is no Tony Stark to bank upon; Peter Parker might be compelled to create his own suits. Although his first self-made costume was not exactly an iconic one, he has spent the last two years in Stark tech. It is not a secret that he is not only a curious but, a genius mind and he would have been deeply studying the suits worn by him and learning a thing or two as he went along. He might even be able to reverse-engineer some of the Stark techs or improvise them. Therefore, although we don’t think the new suit would be as feature packed as Tony Stark’s costumes, this might still be high tech. It could be possible that as seen in the “Big Time” comic book run by Dan Slott, Parker will create new tech to overcome the challenges faced by him.
Filming on the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will start in July, so it is not going to be a long wait before we see set photos revealing the new costume of the Spidey. It is going to be really exciting for sure!
