The movie, Avengers: Endgame had created a lot of new MCU timelines. The very plot of the film revolves around the element of time travel, and the Avengers travel back in time and undo the effects of the snap. The plan requires the whole team to travel to various points in the timeline to get the six Infinity Stones.
The plan was for Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man and Hulk, to visit The Avengers’ Battle of New York in 2012 to get the Space, Mind, and Time Stones. Thor and Rocket were supposed to visit Asgard in 2013 and get the Reality Stone. War Machine and Nebula were to visit Morag in 2014 and get the Power Stone and Hawkeye, and Black Widow visit Vormir in 2014 for getting the Soul Stone. In light of this, here are 5 timelines created by Avengers: Endgame:
1. LOKI ESCAPES IN 2012
There was a moment when the Tesseract was s knocked to Loki’s feet, and God of Mischief had then teleported away with it. Loki now has the ability to teleport anywhere he wants in the galaxy, and he is still working for Thanos, and this means that he could go back to the Mad Titan after his defeat, with one Infinity Stone. This leaves the 2012 Avengers to find Loki. Captain America’s role in the mission can also bring a few changes. He had taken Loki’s sceptre and said “Hail Hydra” to the Strike Force team, and this leaves the sleeper agents with an impression that he joined their cause. The 2023 Cap then tells the 2012 Cap that Bucky is still alive and this, in turn, could change the events of the movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
2. NO THANOS AFTER 2014
This timeline was created after of Nebula’s memory network had been connected to her past self, and it alerts Thanos to what the Avengers are doing up to. The revelation sees the 2014 Nebula steal 2023 Nebula’s identity and travel to 2023 so she can help Thanos travel to 2023 and attack the Avengers. The film then ends with 2023 Nebula kills the 2014 Nebula, and 2014 Gamora’s status being unresolved. The ending for the movie, Avengers: Endgame creates a whole new timeline from the year, 2014 and on this would be without Thanos, Gamora and Nebula. The implications of these absences are pretty big, even if Cap does return the Power Stone to the temple for Star-Lord to find it. Having no Thanos would allow Ronan to not be answerable to anyone, and he can have less resistance to level Xandar. Without Gamora in the timeline, the Guardians of the Galaxy would never have been brought together.
3. CAPTAIN AMERICA RETURNS TO THE 1940S TIMELINE
Cap was seen choosing to go back to the 1940s and see Peggy Carter and here, they share their dance. This is not a single moment though, because he stays there and also grows old with her and then reappears in 2023 and passed the mantle of Captain America to Falcon. The Russo Brothers say that Cap had created a new timeline and suggests that any time travel would create a new timeline. McFeely and Markus said that Cap had travelled to the past to be with Peggy and so he was her original husband in the MCU timeline, and this makes it a time loop.
4. NO MJOLNIR AFTER THE DARK WORLD
Although we all believed that Captain America returns the Mjolnir and Reality Stone to Asgard in the year, 2013 to avoid creating a new branched reality, the suggestion that any instance of time travel would create a timeline leads to a different offshoot. Frigga having met a future version of Thor could have actually impacted her death, and Rocket running away from Asgardian guards with the Reality Stone could also have other implications. We also saw the 2023 Thor take his hammer from the 2013 timeline so, in effect, the Mjolnir does not exist after the events of The Dark World.
5. A NEW SHIELD TIMELINE IN THE 1970S
Using the very same logic, there is a possibility that a different timeline could have been created in 1970. Even if Steve returns the Space Stone to Camp Lehigh, his prior actions would have resulted in a timeline where Hank Pym sees a few of his Pym Particles being stolen. This leads him to believe that S.H.I.E.L.D. is trying to steal his invention. There is not much in 1970 that could actually create a new timeline, other than Howard Stark’s conversation with his future son, Tony Stark.
WHAT DO THESE TIMELINES MEAN FOR THE MCU?
The MCU has a huge story on its hands with the canon and characters built over 22 movies and so, avoiding these complications of what happens in other timelines may be for the best. They could be collateral of events of the Avengers’ actions and not be mentioned again. It really depends on how the MCU will continue to move ahead, as these new timelines and the multiverse may be used to bring back characters like Captain America and Iron Man with new histories. It is way too early to say if these timelines will have a place in the MCU after Avengers: Endgame.
