Avengers: Endgame Fan Theory: This Is The Heroic Farewell That Might Be In Store For Captain America

Captain America is the second most popular MCU hero after the Iron-Man among the MCU fans. People love the stories featuring Captain America. Steve Rogers is the leader that people adore and The Avengers follow. He invariably does the right thing always. He believes in fighting for the right cause and above all, for the greater good of humanity. Therefore, a major sacrifice from the hero in Avengers: Endgame is pretty much certain.

During his entire life, Captain America has not managed to walk away from war, barring the brief time he spent prior to getting injected with the Super Soldier Serum. Ultron had called Steve “God’s righteous man who pretends that he could live without a war.” In reality, the fights generally draw him instead of him looking for a fight. Therefore, he has reconciled with that. He knows that his calling is in fighting for those who are incapable of defending themselves and their freedom. It won’t be wrong to say that he has started liking this responsibility.

That’s why a theory proposed by Redditor MrDietzsch turns out to be more of a fanboy desire. People expect Captain America to make the supreme sacrifice by perishing to save others’lives. However, what if his sacrifice is not to die, but, to give away his fighting ability? That would take away from him the one thing that he truly loves and finds solace in. The crazy theory suggests:

“In the comic books we have seen Cap lose his Super Soldier Serum and become a weak and grumpy old man and I think that would be a perfect scenario for the story moving forward.

What if Cap’s sacrifice comes in the way of losing his powers and therefore losing what is arguably the thing he loves the most, which is his ability to fight for those who can’t and protect freedom…

I could see Cap sacrificing himself, and us fans reaching for the box of tissues, but in the end, it would be revealed that Steve Rogers gave up what he loved the most and is now a frail old man… That would be a rather depressing end for such an iconic Hero, but it leaves the door open for a future return of Steve Rogers as Cap.”

This would be quite an unusual turn of events for Captain America fans, but, it would also allow Chris Evans’ to return in the future if needed. Evans has stated that his MCU run ends with Avengers 4, but, if Steve doesn’t die, then we might see him come back in future. The theory further mentions:

“If Steve Rogers aged 65/70 years in a matter of hours, or days, we could agree that he merely has to resemble the person he was and therefore the character can be recast with a 70+-year-old actor (and additional makeup to make him look even older).

Captain America 4 could be a story about how Sam Wilson takes up the mantle of Captain America, and old man Steve Rogers becomes the new Director of Shield and mentors Sam from behind the scenes.”

Captain America has turned out to be Marvel’s biggest solo Superhero franchise as far as the quality, critical appreciation and box office earnings go. Therefore, it won’t be a bad idea to create a Captain America 4 identical to Iron Man 4.

However, there is the argument that one of the two big heroes in MCU must die in this film. If we compare Captain America and Iron-Man, the fandom would prefer letting Captain go in lieu of the Iron-Man. Marvel is also keen to hand over the mantle to the new crop of heroes such as Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Doctor Strange. Therefore, it is extremely unlikely that these two characters would emerge alive at the end of Avengers 4.

We know that it is almost impossible to visualize an MCU where Captain America or Iron-Man don’t exist. However, Kevin Feige has confessed that in future, the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be completely different. Therefore, we can expect the unexpected.

Avengers: Endgame releases on April 26, 2019.
