Veteran American film actress Jane Alice Peters who was professionally known as Carole Lombard was born on 6th October 1908. She was especially noted for her energetic, often off-beat characters in the screwball comedies of the 1930s. Carole was the highest-paid celebrity in Hollywood in the late 1930s. She was born into an affluent family in Fort Wayne, Indiana but was raised in Los Angeles by her single mother. When she was just 12 years old she was enrolled by the film director Allan Dwan and earned her screen debut in A Perfect Crime in 1921.

Anxious to evolve an actress, she ratified a contract with the Fox Film Corporation at age 16, but mainly portrayed short characters. She was declined by Fox after a car accident left a scar on her face. Carole seemed in 15 short comedies for Mack Sennett between 1927 and1929 and then started appearing in characteristic films such as The Racketeer and High Voltage. After a successful arrival in The Arizona Kid in 1930, she was signed to a contract with Paramount Pictures. Paramount shortly started casting Carole as a leading lady, mainly in drama films. Her profile boosted when she wedded actor William Powell in 1931, but the couple separated after two years.

A turning point in her career came when she featured in Howard Hawks’ 1934 pioneering screwball comedy Twentieth Center. The actress establishes her corner in this genre and proceeded to occur in films such as Hands Across the Table, My Man Godfrey for which she was selected for the Academy Award for Best Actress. At this time, she wedded the King of Hollywood, Clark Gable and the couple earned much attention from the media. Keen to win an Oscar, Carole started to shift towards more serious characters at the end of the decade. Ineffective in this aim, she backed to comedy in 1941 release Alfred Hitchcock’s Mrs Smith and Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not to Be. Carole’s career was cut short when she expired at just the age of 33 onboard TWA Flight 3 on Mount Potosi, Nevada on January 16, 1942, while returning from a war bond tour.
