She was born on 4^th January in 1958 in Racine, Wisconsin, U.S. She joined the University of Wisconsin where she was a multi-sport standout in track & field, Badminton, and gymnastics.

She began her career as a bodybuilder after completing her graduation and made rapid progress. Initially, she trained at Ernie’s Gym in Madison. In 1980, she became first in Ms. Mid America in the tall and overall contest. That year, she placed third at the American Couples. In 1983, she became second at the NPC Nationals and the following year, she placed first at the American Women’s Championships. That year, she won her first title at Ms. Olympia. She won the title back to back six years till 1989. After that, she made her acting debut with the film The Morning After in 1986. But she became famous for portraying the role of Kara in the film, Double Impact in 1991. Many brutal fight scenes were involved in the film. In 1994, she appeared in the film, Natural Born Killers and the following year, she was cast as Claudia in the film, Ballistic. She first appeared on television with the television series The Adventures of Brisco Country. She got her fame for appearing as Atalanta in the series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys in 1995. In 2005, she appeared as Hulk Paige in the series, Charmed. Her first book, Strength Training for Beauty was released in 1986. Later, she published five more books.

In 1982, she married Jeff Everson. The couple adopted a Russian child. But they got divorced in 1996. Later in 1998, she married a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Steve Donia. They also adopted two children from Russia.

In 1999, she was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame.
