She took born on 8th November in 1967 in San Francisco, California. But she was raised in Menlo Park. She is the daughter of Lora Thorne and Walter Smith. Her parents got divorced when she was 7. She completed her graduation from Tamalpais High School. While attending high school, she performed at the Ensemble Theatre Company.
Thorne-Smith made her debut on the big screen with the film, Lucas in 1986. Afterward, she appeared in several films and 1998, she appeared in the box office flop film Chairman of the Board. On Hallmark Channel, she was cast in the lead role in the film, Emma Fielding Mystery. Some of her films are Welcome to 18, Side Out, Whisper of the Heart, Summer School, and others. Her debut television series was Fast Time in 1986. She became famous for appearing in the series Melrose Place in which she played the role of Alison Parker from 1992-1997. She also portrayed the role of Georgia Thomas in the series Ally McBeal from 1997-2000. She also got fame for appearing as Cheryl in the series, According to Jim. The other television series of her are Growing Pains, Anything But Love, Partners, Spin City, Robot Chicken, Sorority Wars, and so on. She released her novel titled, Outside In in 2007. She also became the spokesperson for Almay cosmetics in 1997.
She has dated her Melrose Place co-star, Andrew Shue in the early 1990s. From 2000-2001, she was married to geneticist Andrew Conrad. Later in 2007, she got married to Roger Fishman with whom she has a son.
She has been nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award three times and won the award once.
