She was born on 21st July in 1986 in Passaic, New Jersey, the U.S. But she grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. At the age of 14, her family moved back to Columbia but she remained in the U.S. She studied performing arts at Boston Arts Academy. At the age of 24, she decided to pursue a career in acting in 2010 and that year, she was featured in the music video of Faces. The following year, she moved to New York City and studied acting.
She began her career in acting in 2011 with the short film, Detour as Angela. That year, she appeared on big-screen in the film, Festival. She played the role of Malea in the film, My Man Is a Loser in 2014. The following year, she played the role of Lucia in the film, Peter and John. She also was cast as Killerman in the role of Lola in 2019. She will next appear in the film, Beyond Control as Tasha. She first appeared on television in 2011 with the television series, Body of Proof. She became famous for portraying the role of Maritza Ramos in the Netflix series, Orange Is the New Black to which she was attached from 2013-2017. Her performance earned her several awards. She also got fame for playing the role of Lina Santillan in the series, Jane the Virgin from 2014-2019. She lent her voice as Vestia in the television series, Elena of Avalor from 2018-2019. Currently, she is playing the role of Crazy Patrol in the series Doom Patrol. Her first memoir, In the Country We Love: My Family Divided was published in 2016.
