In 1993, the actress, Donna Douglas, and her partner Curt Wilson filed a $200 million lawsuit against Whoopi Goldberg, Bette Midler, and Disney claiming that the musical film, Sister Act was a copy from a book, A Nun in the Closet that owned by the partners. They claimed that there were over 100 similarities between the books and the film. The screenplay of the book was once submitted to those companies but the judge took the side of Disney and other companies at the end.
She began her career when moved to New York City and started appearing as an illustrated model. She was featured as the Letter Girl on The Perry Como Show in 1957. She was awarded the Miss By-Line by the New York photographers and reporters that she wore in The Ed Sullivan Show. Later in 1961, she appeared in the role of Barbara Simmons in the detective series, Checkmate. She became famous for appearing in the series The Beverly Hillbillies in the role of Elly May Clampett. She was attached to the series from 1962-1971. Her other television series are The Twilight Zone, Whirlybirds, Thriller, Michael Shayne, McMillan and Wife, The Jerry Springer Show, and many more. After seeing her in The Ed Sullivan Show, Wallis cast her in the drama Career as Majorie Burke in 1959. That year, she also appeared in the musical comedy, Li’l Abner in a small part. She was cast as Frankie in the film, Frankie and Johnny. Her other films are Lover Come Back, Bella Are Ringing, Strangers When We Meet, Chronicles of Life Trials, and others. She also performed as a gospel singer and recorded several gospel albums as well. She also was a speaker at a church group, youth group in school and college. She published the children’s book, Donna’s Critters & Kids: Children’s Stories with a Bible Touch. Apart from that, she also wrote other books.
She was born on 26th September in 1932 in Pride, Louisiana, the U.S. Her parents were Elma and Emmett Ratcliff Smith.From 1949-1954, she was married to Ronald John Bourgeois with whom she had a child. Later in 1971, she married Robert M. Leeds but they got divorced in 1980.On 1st January in 2015, she died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 82.She has won the Miss Golden Globe Award and TV Land Award.
