She was born on 31st December in 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the daughter of Andrew and Mary Gaines. Before her graduation, she left New York City and joined the rock band Crow. Afterward, she joined several musicals and participated in it. In 1968, she released her first single Aquarius and her second single released in 1971.
She then partnered with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte and started recording songs. Her first album was Lady of the Night. Her song Love to Love You Baby released in 19785 and was ranked number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1977, she released her two concept albums I Remember Yesterday and Once Upon a Time. Later, she released several singles that went Platinum. Some of her hits are Heaven Knows, Dim All the Lights, Bad Girls, Last Dance, Hot Stuff, and many others. In 2008, she released her first studio album in 17 years titled Crayons.
In 1980, she married the singer Bruce Sudano with whom she has a daughter.
In 2012, Summer died from Lung cancer at her home. She achieved five Grammy Awards and six American Music Awards.
