She was born on 28th February in 1960 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She was the daughter of Simon and Nelly Hoogstraten.
In 1978, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her modeling career. That year, she was selected for the 25th Anniversary Great Playmate Hunt as a finalist. In 1979, she became Playboy’s Miss August and started working at the Playboy Club. In 1980, she was chosen to be Playboy’s Playmate of the year. She appeared in the television series like Fantasy Island, The Tonight Show, Buck Rogers. She worked in films like Americathon, Galaxina, Skatetown, U.S.A, etc.
She married Paul Snider in 1979 but soon after she has fallen in love with the director Peter Bogdanovich. She separated from Snider and filed for a divorce. On 14th August 1980, Stratten went to meet Snider at her rented house. At night, the roommates of Snider found Stratten and Snider’s dead body in the bedroom. According to the police, Snider shot Stratten and after that, he committed suicide.
Stratten’s final film They All Laughed was released in 1981. Two motion pictures, TV film Death of a Centerfold and Star 80 were released that inspired by her death. Bryan Adams also sang the song The Best Was Yet to Come which also depicted on her death.
