In the movie, Infinity War, we had seen Rocket Raccoon, Thor, and Groot travelling to Nidavellir for forging the Stormbreaker, Thor’s new weapon. The film had then shot Thor into the spotlight on the battlefield in Wakanda, and here, the Avengers lost the battle against Thanos and his forces. The God of Thunder’s storyline in the Infinity War script had included a huge detail that had been absent from the final cut.
The Art of Avengers: Infinity War, the book that contains all the concept artworks for the film had revealed a few surprising story arcs for a few superheroes. One of these images show Rocket and Thor fighting huge snakes. The snakes had been inspired by the Midgard Serpent from the Norse Mythology.
In the Norse mythology, the Midgard Serpent is known as a God who is a reminder of order amongst all chaos. In the native language, the snake is called Jormungandr. The World Serpent lies in the ocean, and it holds the world and wraps the body around it.
This snake bites its own tail and holds a pretty firm grip over it. The famous Norse Prophecy of Ragnarok, Armageddon, is said to start when the Midgard Serpent makes a decision to let go of its tail, and this spews chaos in the world. It would have surely been great to see Thor and Rocket fight the snakes.
The director, Kevin Feige said this about the Mad Titan’s status in the MCU:
“Thanos has been lurking in the shadows with a desire to obtain these Infinity Stones, which has played a big part in our other films,” Feige had said.
“We’ve introduced the Tesseract, revealed to be the Space Stone; the Mind Stone, which came out of Loki’s sceptre and then went into Vision’s forehead; and the Time Stone: the Eye of Agamotto that Doctor Strange wears is an Infinity Stone itself! And of course, the Guardians dealt with the Power Stone.”
“So these storytelling devices that we’ve seeded into every film will continue to play a part and come together. We’ve been teasing this for six years. That’s a long time to tease something cinematically before paying it off. Thanos has to be the greatest villain in our movies.”
Thor and Rocket had last made an appearance in Infinity War, and the synopsis is as follows:
Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.
