Crain married Paul Brinkman against the wishes of her mother and they had seven children together. At a time in 1950, Crain was earning $3500 per week. Crain and Brinkman bought a large home in Beverly Hills. The home can be seen in a driving sequence in the film The Star.

They had a turmoil laden married life. They had filed for divorce in the mid-1950s and later reconciled. After that, they remained married but lived separately. She died a few months after Brinkman’s death in 2003 due to a heart attack. She was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party.
