She was born on 1st October in 1986 in New York, U.S. She is the daughter of Joel and Janet Smollett. She is African-American and Jewish.
Smollett-Bell began her career with the television series Sunday in Paris in 1991. She came to prominence after being cast in the series On Our Own in 1994. She became famous for appearing as Jess Merriweather in the series Friday Night Lights. Her other television credits are Underground, Do No Harm, True Blood, Wanda at Large, and many more. She made her big-screen debut with the film Jack in 1996. She got famous for appearing in Eve’s Bayou as Eve Batiste in 1997 for which she was nominated for an award. Her other films are Gridiron Gang, Hands of Stone, Beautiful Joe, Roll Bounce, etc. She will next appear in the film Birds of Prey as Black Canary.
In 2010, she got married to musician Josiah Bell with whom she has a son.
