Idealistic Hollywood beauty standards may be to blame for Top Gun beauty Kelly not being asked to occur in the upcoming sequel, the actress suggests. Kelly told that those at the back of Top Gun: Maverick, due out next June, likely didn’t enter her because she’s fat and old. Oh my God, no, Kelly, now 62, told I’m old and I’m fat and I look age appropriate for what my age is. And that is not what that entire scene is about.
She also said I’d much rather feel completely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff. Kelly featured as an astrophysicist and the love interest of Tom Cruise’s character in Top Gun, the 1986 hit action drama about naval aviator Pete Maverick Mitchell (Cruise). In 2020 Maverick brings back Cruise, 57, but will see Jennifer Connelly, 48, step into the character of Maverick’s love interest.
Kelly held a variety of works while pursuing her career, such as waitressing and snagged a few stage characters before reaching a supporting character in the Academy Award-nominated film Reuben, Reuben in 1983. This brought to a lot of TV work and a lead character opposite Harrison Ford in the highly renowned thriller Witness in 1985. For which she earned Golden Globe and BAFTA award nominations. This box office hit, directed by Peter Weir, got her noticed around Hollywood and producers took note of her.
One of them was Jerry Bruckheimer, who cast Kelly as Charlie Blackwood in the mega-hit Top Gun which became the highest-grossing film of the year and gave her some crucial name recognition. For this film, she won the Bravo Otto Award. But that breakout performance didn’t help her career in terms of high-profile work. She portrayed prosecutor Kathryn Murphy in The Accused in 1988. Never curious in being box-office gold, she stayed loyal to the theater, even after being established as a major star during the mid to late 1980s, taking such different stage characters in such William Shakespeare plays as The Merchant of Venice, Don Juan, Twelfth Night, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Mourning Becomes Electra and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
