She was born on 28th April in 1952 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, U.S. but she grew up in Ithaca, New York. Her parents are John and Eileen McDonnell. She has Irish ancestry. She joined the Long Wharf Theatre in Connecticut in which she worked for more than 20 years.
She began her acting career by appearing in several Broadway productions like The Heidi Chronicles, Execution of Justice, and Summer and Smoke. She made her big-screen debut in 1984 with the film, Garbo Talks in the role of Lady Capulet. She got her breakthrough in films and also was nominated for the Academy Award for appearing as Stands With A Fist in the film, Dances with Wolves in 1990. She again was nominated for Academy Award for the film, Passion Fish in 1992. In 2011, she appeared as Kate Roberts in the film, Scream 4. Her other films are Margin Call, Crazy Like a Fox, Mumford, Blue Chips, and many others. In 1980, she made her debut on television with the television series, As the World Turns as Claudia Colfax.
She came to prominence for appearing as Eleanor Carter in the series ER. She got her fame for starring as President Laura Roslin in the series Battlestar Galactica to which she was attached from 2004-2009. She played the role of Captain Sharon Raydor in the series, The Closer from 2009-2012. Her other television series are Veronica Mars, Major Crimes, Killer Hair, Grey’s Anatomy, High Society, 12 Angry Men, and so on. In 1984, she married actor Randle Mell with whom she has two children. She has won the Saturn Award and she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award, Primetime Emmy Award, Gotham Award, etc.
