The Canadian-born American film actress and producer who co-founded the Pickford-Fairbanks Studio and the United Artists film studio and was one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science who yearly present the Oscar award ceremony is none other than the most popular actress of the 1910s and 1920s, Mary Pickford.
She was born on 8th April in 1892 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were John Charles Smith and Charlotte Hennessey. She was of English Methodist and Irish Catholic descent. At the age of six, she appeared in a silent part in the production of Thee Silver King. Gradually, she began to appear in many melodramas and then appeared as Little Eva in the production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
In 1906, she supported singer Chauncey Olcott on Broadway in Edmund Burke. In 1909, she signed with the Biograph Company and appeared in small roles in many silent films. She became to be known as The Biograph Girl or Blondilocks for her hairstyle. Though she left Biograph in 1910 and returned in 1912 after working two years at the Independent Moving Pictures Company. Afterward, she started appearing in films in a child role and began to get her stardom for starring in many films. In 1929, she appeared as a reckless socialite in the film, Coquette for which she received her first Academy Award. Gradually, the sound film raised its head in the industry and Pickford started to understand that the audience were liking the sound films more. Pickford retired from acting in 1933 and her last film was released in 1934. Some of her films are Mistress Neil, The Eternal Grind, Stella Maris, The Hoodlum, Rosita, and many others. After the ending of World War I, she raised the Motion Picture Relief Fund to help the financially needy actors. In 1919, she founded the production company along with Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith. In 1955, Charlie Chaplin left the company and the following year, Pickford sold her remaining shares.
Pickford had gone through two failed marriages. In 1937, she got married third time to Charles Buddy Rogers. They adopted two children.
On 29th May in 1979, she died of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage she had suffered the week before.
Apart from getting the Academy Award, Pickford achieved the Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievements, OFTA Film Hall of Fame, and Star on the Walk of Fame.
