She took born on 17^th August in 1920 in Ranelagh, Country Dublin, Ireland. She had a keen interest to become an actress at her earl age and the age of 10, she took acting training from Rathmines Theatre Company. She then joined the Abbey Theatre at the age of 14.

In 1938, she made her screen debut with the film, Kicking the Moon Around. She got her major role of Mary Yellen in the Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Jamaica Inn in 1939. The same year, she moved to Hollywood and appeared in the production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In 1950, she first appeared with John Wayne in the film, Rio Grande and after that, the pair became a huge hit and they appeared in several films together. In the 1960s, she started appearing in films in motherly roles for her age. In 1971, she retired from the film industry but she made her return after 20 long years with the film, Only the Lonely in 1991. Her other film credits are They Met in Argentina, The Black Swan, The Spanish Main, Sitting Pretty, and many more.

From 1939-1941, she was married to George H. Brown. In 1941, she married Will Price with whom she had a child. But they got divorced in 1953 and later in 1968, she married her third husband Charles F. Blair but they also divorced in 1978.

She had achieved the Honorary Award, Golden Boot Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, OFTA Film Hall of Fame, etc.
