Top 14 Most Badass Female Anime Characters Of All Time

In the way it portrays the female characters, anime often gives off the feeling that it is less than kind. Many outsiders could mistakenly judge the genre, with giggling gaggles of schoolgirls, busty babes, and an array of ever-so-short skirts and skimpy outfits. This, though, is only a small sub-section of anime. There are so many other aspects that make up a character.

Appearance, personality, history, you name it. But their ability is one aspect that certainly ups the cool factor of a character. These are some of the most powerful characters in anime who are beautiful, smart, or simply formidable. These anime characters have won their places on the list due to their long-lasting popularity, from the heavy to the cool and the sweet. We’ve pulled female fighters from some of the most successful anime shows and films for this video. That power can be physical, technological, magical.

Erza Scarlet is a Fairy Tail S-Class swordswoman who is nicknamed “Titania” for her notoriety as the most powerful female wizard of the guild, referring to the Fairy Queen from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She uses magic called “The Knight” to “requip” instantaneously, exchange and equip various weapons and armors that change her already enormous strength and magical ability.

Abandoned in childhood by her mother, Irene Belserion, at the age of 11, Erza is imprisoned at the Tower of Heaven and befriends Jellal Fernandes, who, after her red hair, gives her the last name ‘Scarlet.’ While leading a slave rebellion, she first unlocks her magic ability, only to be betrayed by a brainwashed Jellal and forced to flee alone from the tower.

Her experiences lead her to join Fairy Tail and become a serious-minded but caring disciplinarian who, in the absence of Makarov Dreyar, briefly becomes the seventh master of the guild when the guild is revived one year after the death of Tartaros. During their adventures, Erza becomes fond of her mates throughout the course of Fairy Tail. The character is named after Eru from the one-shot manga Fairy Tale by Mashima, which acted as the Fairy Tail pilot.

Artoria Pendragon, Saber’s class name, is one of the key characters of Fate/Zero. Saber is a valiant knight who is summoned by a teenager named Shirou Emiya to engage in a battle between masters and slaves who are battling to fulfil their aspirations using the mythical Holy Grail.

Saber is a young woman with a powerful will who typically talks truthfully but is able, if necessary, to lie. She is brave, ambitious, and determined to obtain the Holy Grail. She constantly insists that she is, above all, a knight and a king and that her gender is of little significance to her and her position.

The identity of Saber as both a “human” and a “king” is one of her character’s biggest challenges in the Fourth and Fifth Holy Grail Wars. Owing to her status as a knight and a servant, she dislikes being regarded as a lady, or even as a human. She seeks to maintain the idea that, first and foremost in her head, she is just a servant, a tool for her master. After the series’ main illustrator proposed making an armoured woman as a protagonist for the visual novel, Saber was created by Kinoko Nasu.

The main protagonist in Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell manga and anime series is Major Motoko Kusanagi or just “Major.” She is a synthetic enhanced human working as the field commander of Public Security Section 9, the Japanese National Public Safety Commission’s fictitious anti-cybercrime law enforcement branch.

She is well known for her expertise in hacking, deduction and military tactics because she is strong-willed, physically dominant, and highly intelligent. Kusanagi is a leading expert in tactical warfare of the fourth generation and cyber brain warfare. She is considered by her peers as the most heavily mechanized member of Section 9, the strongest hand-to-hand melee fighter and the most experienced “hacker and net diver.” None of Motoko Kusanagi’s early history is known. Only hints of any of her history, usually by flashbacks, and almost always from others’ points of view; hardly from Kusanagi herself.

The body of Motoko Kusanagi was modelled as a mass production model by the manga author and artist Masamune Shirow so that she would not be noticeable. Her electrical and mechanical system is unusual in that it has elements that are not present on the civilian market. This appearance was purposely selected by Shirow so that Motoko would not be harvested for those pieces.

When the story begins, Jun seems to be a successful supermodel in Tokyo. She is a reserved and timid girl, who tends to resist most social interactions, with two exceptions: she is normally open to her boss and very nice to an aspiring teen model named Kazumi, who now lives with her after the horrific death of her parents from an attack from a beast.

A woman named Lan Asuka discovers her, causing her to face a werewolf-like creature called the devil’s beast. Her powers awaken when it cuts into Jun and she becomes a demon beast herself. Through her powers, she kills the beast and reverts to her human form. Asuka talks of her membership in the Human Alliance military force, whose mission is to track down and destroy all those afflicted by Devil Beast Syndrome.

Asuka offers an ultimatum to Jun; she will be hunted by them if Jun does not hunt for them. Jun has no choice except, from that point on, to follow Asuka. She discovers, though, that it is not just Asuka’s ultimatum that prevents her from following Asuka’s orders, but also something she can not defy towards Asuka. She becomes more independent as the series progresses.

Touka, an eighteen-year-old ghoul from the 20th Ward, works part-time in Anteiku as a waitress and attends high school. She integrates well into human culture and feels it is of the utmost priority to maintain one’s ghoul persona.

She seems to be a sweet, normal girl who is not suspected of being a ghoul. Although her casual clothes are tomboyish streetwear, she wears her waitress or high school dress for work and school, respectively. Typically, she has a cool nature, but she can be reckless and very violent, arising from the outlaw life she had to endure after her father was killed by CCG when she was very young. She is a strong fighter and, on even grounds, is more than a match for either Shuu Tsukiyama or Nishiki Nishio, if not almost as strong as Renji.

As well as his teaching buddy, she becomes Kaneki’s guide to the Ghoul world. After Hinami’s parents are killed by police, she also takes up the role of Hinami’s guardian and is very protective of her. She came to be known as Rabbit later. She is a naturally kind child, despite her overall rash nature, who takes her work very seriously as part of the Anteiku Stability Team.

In the anime series Cowboy Bebop, Faye Valentine is one of the bounty hunting crew members. Often she is seen in a revealing outfit and with a cigarette. Faye is actually about 77 years old, but she seems to be no more than 23 years old, having been forced into a cryogenic freeze after a space shuttle crash.

Faye crosses paths with Spike and Jet twice over the course of the series and makes herself at home on their ship the second time around, much to the dismay and disdain of the two men, both of whom have their own doubts about women in general. Seemingly nothing more than a thorn in the sides of her partners, Faye is truly a well-rounded team member.

Despite her modest presence, she can carry herself incredibly well, showing at least once in the series that she has a strong punch. Adept at flying, Faye stood her ground in her Red Tail ship in an aerial dogfight, and occasionally even in an aerial dogfight against Spike. She also excels with guns and is first seen destroying a shop in the series, although afterwards she is quickly apprehended.

Akame, otherwise known as Akame of the Demon Sword Murasame, is the titular protagonist, having long black hair, red eyes, and a harsh, intense personality, alongside Tatsumi, and the lead anti-heroine. Sold to the Empire at a young age along with her sister Kurome, she became one of the Elite Seven assassins under Gozuki.

Akame seems to be a very intense and cold-hearted person resulting from her hellish schooling into which the Empire pushed her and her sister, but it is finally discovered that she is simply socially awkward. She worries so much for her comrades and she is always concerned because of her first-hand experience that war always has a high death rate, and one of them might not make it out alive.

She is persuaded by the Night Raid and the cause against the Empire during a mission to kill former General Najenda. Her treason sparks an extreme competition, along with a shared ambition to be the one to end the other, between her fellow assassin and sibling Kurome. Akame initially used the Shingu “Kiriichimonji” a katana capable of causing wounds that never heal and received Gozuki’s Imperial Arm “One Slice Kill: Murasame” whose poison blade immediately kills anyone it cuts.

The co-protagonist of the series is Revy, often referred to by her actual name, Revecca Lee. For the Lagoon Company, she does most of the combat. About her history, little is known. Revy is a Chinese American from Chinatown, Manhattan, near Mott Street, who spent much of her childhood as a thief in the mid to late 20s.

Flashbacks in the series show that by shooting at cans, she could have honed her skills with firearms. Revy is very confident, irritable, violent, cynical, and erratic in her emotions. She is undiplomatic, unlike Rock, trusting in the use of brute force and aggression in order to get her way. She is a sadistic, conscience-free assassin who, at the slightest provocation, would shoot anybody, including innocent people.

Revy is one of the series’ toughest fighters, whose firearms abilities and ability to dodge bullets are nearly inhuman and unmatched. There are only a few other characters who can keep their own against her in battle, such as Roberta and Ginji. She has an attitude of caring but bullying towards Rock, the Black Lagoon’s newest and most polite crew member; while she acknowledges him later in the season, she is mostly intimidating him.

Mikasa is a childhood friend of Eren’s who had been taken in by his family. While the Jaeger family had never formally adopted her, she felt a deep sense of gratitude for Eren’s parents, even though she never considered them to be her own. A usually quiet and withdrawn girl, she retains a stoic look except when it is to Eren and her friends.

Mikasa’s father, as eventually revealed, was a descendant of an Eldian bloodline that was changed to produce super soldiers equal in strength to a Titan. These genetically inherited talents, while under duress, may offer a descendant access to the battle experience of their ancestors. Eren tracks Mikasa to the trader’s cabin after Eren and his father discover the Ackermans’ deaths during a scheduled doctor’s visit. The instincts of Mikasa are awakened when Eren encourages her to fight back and survive.

She feels obligated to defend and obey him at all costs, including joining him in the Survey Corps, because of this and because of Eren’s generosity in giving her a dark red scarf that Mikasa treasures and wears throughout her life. She graduates from the top of her class in training corps and is recognized as an unprecedented genius and prodigy by soldiers, easily worth a hundred men in combat.

During her generation, which was the 150th generation of Claymores, Clare was a female Claymore and No. 47 of the Organization. Clare is the protagonist of the series. As a child, a Yoma posing as Clare’s brother kills Clare’s parents. Later, with a Yoma pack, Clare travels. In Teo village, Teresa destroys the pack and frees Clare inadvertently.

Teresa continues to travel with Clare. She is the only Claymore known to have taken a fellow Claymore’s flesh and blood instead of that of a Yoma, making her 1/4 Yoma, as opposed to 1/2 human, like all the other warriors. In an experiment to try to create a better fighter, this was allowed to happen. Since she was deemed weak and was given the last rank of No. 47 in the 150th generation, this experiment was dubbed a failure.

Despite this, Clare gradually achieved a considerable level of power through her own efforts and the support of others and became one of the first partly awakened beings. Her emotions may break out quite easily, even if she can appear composed on the surface. The only person known to have volunteered to undergo the process to become a Claymore is also Clare.

In the original Band of the Hawk, Casca was the only female participant, behind only Griffith and Guts in swordsmanship.

Her ambivalent relation to all of them makes her capricious and moody. The twin sister of Android 17 and Dr. Gero’s eighteenth android creation is Android 18, originally named Lazuli when she was an ordinary human. Dr. Gero had forcefully turned her and her twin brother, Android 17, into cyborgs in order to fulfil his vendetta against Goku.

Although her interests do not initially deviate from this expectation, her curiosity about activating Android 16 causes Android 17 to take it upon himself to kill Gero. Since marrying Goku’s best friend Krillin, the present-time version of the character has very little or no interest in following Gero’s orders and becomes a main character in the series. Android 18 is a brutal murderer in an alternative universe who began a reign of terror along with Android 17 over Earth that lasted for twenty years before Trunks killed both of them. Android 18 will finally become a part of the Z Fighters.

A Android 18 typically shows a confident and cool character, especially in combat, like her brother, although her cynical humor is the most prominent characteristic of her personality. This is seen as Goku takes notice of her encounter at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament with the Dragon Team.

Ryuko Matoi is a 17-year-old schoolgirl who goes to Honnouji Academy to find the man who murdered her father, Isshin Matoi, and is the protagonist of the series. Ryuko becomes a teenage delinquent, often getting into fights and even going so far as to join a gang because of a lack of supervision and being bullied by others.

Six months before she enrolled at Honnouji Academy, she received a letter from her father, and she returned home to find him bleeding to death with a red Scissor Blade plunged into his chest. Isshin told her first of all that if she wanted to live a happy life, she’d have to get up and walk out, but if she wanted to fight in his place, she’d have to take the sword, and she’d be able to find his murderer as long as she had it. She lives with a family named Mankanshoku.

Ryuko has a relatively simple personality: fierce and persistent. During the battle at the Honnouji Academy Cultural & Sports Grand Festival, Ryuko is later discovered to be Satsuki’s presumed dead younger sister, revealed to have been a human infused with Life Fibers as a result of her being experimented with by her mother Ragyo as a newborn baby.

Maki Oze is Tokyo’s Special Fire Force Company 8’s Second Generation Fire Soldier. Before joining the Special Fire Force to help assist others, she was a member of the Tokyo army. Her father is Tokyo Imperial Armed Forces General Danro Oze and her brother Tagaki is a Criminal Investigation Division 1st Lieutenant.

Maki utilizes her second-generation powers as a seasoned combatant to produce live fireballs which use her Iron Owl projectile weapons to drive her. Besides that, from a long distance, she is even able to manipulate fires, allowing her to extinguish, contain or drive away any sort of fire. She is a hopeless romantic at heart, despite Maki’s cool and focused exterior while on a mission. Though she has a gentle personality, she might snap if anyone thinks she’s unfeminine because of her masculine body.

She is also very courteous to the strangers she encounters for the first time and her fellow team-mates. Maki respects Takehisa Hinawa a great deal because both of them are retired troops. She has the exterior of a capable warrior, but is a kind-hearted human, she effortlessly beat both Shinra and Arthur Boyle, who are both Third Generations, without hesitation in a fight. As she expresses enjoyment in creating fire creatures, Maki enjoys using her ability for fun.
