Olivia Mary de Havilland was brought into the world July 1, 1916, in Tokyo, Japan, to British guardians, Lilian Augusta (Ruse), a previous entertainer, and Walter Augustus de Havilland, an English teacher, and patent lawyer. Her sister, Joan, later to get acclaimed as Joan Fontaine, was brought into the world the next year.
Her last name originates from her fatherly granddad, whose family was from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Her folks separated from when Olivia was only three years of age, and she moved with her mom and sister to Saratoga, California.

In the wake of moving on from secondary school, where she fell prey to the acting bug, Olivia took a crack at Mills College in Oakland. It was while she was at Mills that she took part in the school play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and was spotted by Max Reinhardt.

She so intrigued Reinhardt that he got her for the two his stage form and, later, the Warner Bros. film form in 1935. She again was great to such an extent that Warner heads marked her to a seven-year contract.

No sooner had the ink dried on the agreement than Olivia showed up in three additional movies: The Irish in Us (1935), Alibi Ike (1935) and Captain Blood (1935), the last with the man with whom her profession would be most firmly distinguished, heart breaker Errol Flynn. He and Olivia featured together in eight movies during their vocations.
