Lipton married producer and musician Quincy Jones in 1974. They legally separated in 1986, later divorced in 1990. They have two daughters, Kidada born on 22nd March 1974 & Rashida born on 25th February 1976.

In early 2004, Lipton was diagnosed with colon cancer. She succumbed to is on 11th May 2019.
