The Russian singer who sings folk-songs from different nations in different languages and romances and whose songs are written in rock arrangements is none other than Pelageya Khanova.
She was born on 14th July in 1986 in Novosibirsk, Russian SFSR, USSR. Her mother is Svetlana Gannadiyevna who is a former jazz-singer, theatre director and performing arts instructor. Her father is unknown. Pelageya uses her surname derived from her mother’s last husband.
Her musical journey began when she was 8 after entering the Novosibirsk Conservatoire musical school. In 1996, she participated in a television contest and won the Best folk-singer of Russia title. At the age of 10, she along with her family moved to Moscow. In 2005, she completed her graduation from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts. She sang at Moscow’s 850th Anniversary Pageant concert in 1997 in which she was the solo performer at the Heads of Government of Three States Summit. She also participated in the KVN TV show. Mstislav Rostropovich invited her to a music festival alongside Ravi Shankar, Evgeny Kissin in Paris. She formed a band under her name in 2000. The band released its debut album, Palegeya in 2003. In 2010, she took part in Bobby McFerrin’s project Bobble. She served as a coach in the Russian reality talent show, The Voice and also became one of the coaches of The Voice Kids in the season 1-3 and 5-6. In 2010, she released the album, Paths. She performed the Russian folk song, Oy to ne vecher in the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in 2014. She took a hiatus from music during her pregnancy but made her return to the anniversary concert of Nikolay Rastorguyev where she performed a duet with Lyube.
From 2010-2012, she was married to television director Dmitry Efimovich. Later in 2016, she got married to a Russian hockey player, Ivan Telegin with who she has a daughter.
She has been nominated for the Muz-TV Music Award.
