She took born on 13^th May in 1941 in Vienna, Austria. She is the daughter of Therese Jany and Josef Berger. At the age of 4, she made her on-stage debut with her father who accompanied her on the piano. At the age of 5, she started learning ballet dancing. She also took acting lessons.

She made her debut in acting in 1957 when she was cast in a small role in one of the final films by Willi Forst. She appeared in the film, The Good Soldier Schweik in 1960. In 1962, she moved to Hollywood and worked with several stars. She was cast in the feature film, The Spy with My Face in 1965. She played the role of Magda in the film, Cast a Giant Shadow in 1966. She appeared in a supporting role in the war film, Cross of Iron in 1977. That year, she became the head of the jury at the 27^th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2005, she appeared in the film, Einmaql so wie ich will. She also played a leading role in the film, Welcome to Germany in 2016. Her other films are The Victors, Jack and Jenny, Major Dundee, Our Man in Marrakesh, Roma Bene, The Two Lives of Mattia Pascal, Zettl, Ruhm, and many more. She became famous for appearing as Serena in the television series, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.: The Double Affair in 1964. She played the role of Mona in the television serial, Kir Royal. Her other television series are See How They Run, Babeck, Lilli Lottofee, Scharf aufs Leben, Mama kommt, Hochzeiten, Unter Verdacht, The Name of the Game, and many others. She published her autobiography, Ich habe ja gewubt dab ich fliegen kann in 2006.

In 1966, she got married to German film director, Michael Verhoeven with whom she has two sons.

She has achieved the Adolf Grimme Award, Bambi Award, Bavarian TV Award, German Television Award, Golden Camera Award, German Screen Actors Award, and many more.
