Jean Merilyn Simmons, was a British-American actress and vocalist. She is one of J. Arthur Rank’s “well-spoken young starlets”. She appeared mainly in films, opening with those made in Great Britain during and after World War II, followed largely by Hollywood films from 1950 onwards. She was born on 31 January 1929.

Jean Merilyn Simmons was born in Islington, London, to Charles Simmons, a bronze medalist gymnast at the 1912 Summer Olympics, and his wife, Winifred Aida Simmons. Jean was the youngest of four children, with siblings Harold, Lorna, and Edna. She began acting at the age of 14

The Simmons family was exiled to Winscombe, Somerset during the Second World War. Her father, a physical education teacher, used to teach on contract basis at Sidcot School, and sometime during this period, Simmons taught her eldest sister onto the village. At this point, she desired to be an acrobatic dancer.

Simmons died from lung cancer at her home on 22 January 2010 just 9 days before her 81st birthday, encircled by her family. She was buried in Highgate Cemetery.

All over her life, Simmons spoke publicly about her fight with addiction, and in 2003, became the supporter of the British drugs and human rights charity Release. In 2005, she signed a petition to the British Prime Minister Tony Blair asking him not to elevate cannabis from a class C drug to a class B.
