Born on 12th January 1937 (some references incorrectly list her birth year as 1936), in Edgware, Middlesex, England, Shirley Jean Eaton started on stage as a youth, making her debut at the t of 12 in Set to Partners in 1949 and following it up the following year with Benjamin Britten’s Let’s Make an Opera. Shirley’s first on-camera work was on TV in 1951, but it didn’t take long before the pretty teen started to provide fleeting, adorning interest on film. She found a positive break with small parts in such comedies as Doctor in the House in 1954, The Love Match in 1955. She quickly came to co-star status in the droll features, Three Men in a Boat, Panic in the Parlor, Doctor at Large, Your Past Is Showing while occurring opposite such top stars as Dirk Bogarde and Peter Sellers among others.
Shirley briefly enlisted the Rank Organization. Every once in a while, she enjoyed playing a fetching villainess in a drama, such as In The Girl Hunter in 1963. Experienced also in ballet and voice, Shirley was paid for a great chance to sing and dance with the film, Life Is a Circus, and managed to grace the BBC as well in a limited of their musical configurations of the 1950s.
Her career blow international status, of course, when she characterized Jill Masterson, one of a bevy of beauties linked to titular archvillain Gert Frobe in the film, Goldfinger in 1964. Like many of the Bondian girls before and since her character dearly paid for her stealthy romantic clinches with Sean Connery’s magnetic James Bond. Shirley’s memorable 24-karat gold death scene became the eye-catching draw for the movie. The image was fiddled everywhere — on movie posters, in press junkets, and publicity campaigns.
In its wake, Hollywood beckoned and Shirley shortly earned several female leads in melodrama, crime yarns, war stories, and rugged adventures. Adding to the mesmerizing in such movies as Rhino, Around the World Under the Sea, Ten Little Indians. During this highly productive time, her co-stars ranged from comedy fame Bob Hope in Right on the Lam to horror icon Christopher Lee in The Blood of Fu Manchu. Shirley’s film career stopped with her participation as Sumuru, the ambitious leader of an all-women’s society called Femina, in both The Million Eyes of Sumuru and The Girl from Rio. Many of her movies remain interesting to the public today as they are a product reflective of their times, and a number of them, like she, have earned cult status.
After Shirley’s self-imposed retirement, she, first and foremost, dedicated herself to her family. The widow of building contractor Colin Rowe, she has two sons and is the proud grandmother of five. She also expanded a special talent for writing. In the year 1999, she published her autobiography titled Golden Girl.
