She was born on 21^st April in 1930 in Rome, Italy. She was of English and Italian descent. She is the sister of Patrizia Mangano, Rocco Roy Mangano, and Natascia Mangano. She was raised in poverty during World War II. She learned dancing for seven years from Zhia Ruskaya.

Before becoming an actress, she used to work as a model to support herself. At the age of 16, she won the Miss Rome beauty pageant in 1946 and after that appeared in a small role in a Mario Costa film. The following year, she went on to win the Miss Italia Contest but lost it to Lucia Bose. In 1948, she worked in the film, Mad About Opera but her name in the film remained uncredited. She became very famous for portraying the role of Silvana in the film, Bitter Rice. She was praised widely for her performance in the film. She signed a deal with Lux Film in 1949. Initially, she was cast as the lead role in the film, Under the Olive Tree that released in 1960 but she had to abandon the project for her pregnancy. In 1954, she appeared as Giovanna Masetti in the film, Mambo. She was cast in the role of Rachel in the film, Barabbas. She also appeared in the role of a mother, Lucia in the film, Teorema in 1968. Her final film was Slugs that released in 1988 in which she played the role of Diner but her name was uncredited in the film. Her other films are The Wolf of the Sila, The Gold of Naples, The Verona Trial, The Witches, Dune, Scipio the African, and many more.

She got married to film producer, Dino De Laurentiis with whom she had four children. But the couple got divorced in 1988.

In 1989, Mangano went into a coma after surgery and on 16^th December in 1989, she died of lung cancer in Spain.

She has achieved the David Award, Golden Goblet Award, Silver Ribbon Award, and the others.
