She was born on 17^th January 1985 in Hoensbroek, Heerlen, Limburg, Netherlands. She gained an interest in music at a very early age. After joining music school, she played the flute for two years at the age of 12. By the age of 14, she had already one year of pop singing lessons. At the age of 17, she joined Epica. She became the lead singer of that band. In 2003, she released her debut studio album, The Phantom Agony. In 2005, she released her second album, Consign to Oblivion. Her third and fourth albums, The Divine Conspiracy and Design Your Universe were released in 2007 and 2009 respectively. In 2008, she was suffering from MRSA infections for which Epica had to cancel many of their shows. For that reason, she was replaced by Amanda Somerville in their United States tour in 2008. She has collaborated with several bands like Leaves’ Eyes, Primal Fear, Kamelot, Angra, and Ayreon. Some of her notable singles are Cry for the Moon, Chasing the Dragon, This Is the Time, Storm the Sorrow, Never Enough, Feint, and many more. She also owns a blog, SmoonStyle in which she writes about her makeup, fashion, food, and experiences that she had as a member of Epica. She also posts her personal life on her blog.

In 2013, she got married to her long-term boyfriend, Kamelot keyboard player, Oliver Palotai with whom she has a son.
