American actress and businesswoman Thelma Todd was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, an industrial city near the New Hampshire state line on 29th July 1906. After high school, she went on to college but at her mother’s affirmation entered several beauty contests. Todd was so successful in these endeavors that she arrived on the state level and won the crown of Miss Massachusetts in 1925 and went on to the Miss America contest. She had been making shorts for Hal Roach when she was approved to Paramount Pictures. Her initial film at age 21 was as Lorraine Lane in 1927’s Fascinating Youth, an exotic comedy, which was Paramount’s showcase vehicle for its new stars. Todd earned minor billing in another film that year, God Gave Me Twenty Cents. The following year she featured in Nevada. That year also saw her in three more films, The Gay Defender 1927 being the most notable.
As the 1920s shut, Todd started getting parts in more and more films. In the year 1928 and 1929 alone she was starred in 20 pictures, and not just satires, she also did dramas and gothic horror films. She had a brilliant, breezy, obvious voice with a pleasant trace of a somewhat aristocratic, but not pretentious, New England accent and easily earned the transition to sound films. In the year 1930, she put in 14 more pictures to her resume, with Follow Thru, Dollar Dizzy in 1930, being the most significant. The following year Todd occurred in 14 more films, among them Speak Easily, Let’s Do Things, On the Loose, The Old Bull. Her most prosperous film that year, however, was the Marx Brothers farce Monkey Business. While critics gave the film mixed reviews, the public adored it. She also featured in This Is the Night in 1932. In the year 1934, she earned 16 features, but her career would soon come to a mincing halt. In the following year she appeared in such films as The Misses Stooge, Twin Triplets, all showcasing her considerable comic talents. Todd similarly proved to be a bright businesswoman with the opening of Thelma Todd’s Sidewalk Cafe, a nightclub/restaurant that catered to show business people. It also, unfortunately, enticed some shady underworld types as well, and there were rumors that they were trying to take over her club and use it as a gambling business to fleece the wealthy Hollywood crowd. According to these stories, Todd and her boyfriend, director Roland West, wouldn’t sell their establishment once they found out what the gangsters had in mind, thereby incurring the animosity of people it was not a good idea to become enemies of. Whether the news was true or not, on 16th December 1935, Todd was found dead in her car in her garage in Los Angeles. Her demise was ruled a suicide owing to carbon monoxide poisoning. She was only 29 years old. Her demise has stayed a controversial one even to this day.
For her assistance to the motion picture industry, Todd has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6262 Hollywood Blvd.
