Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy are known to be a very formidable team. Surely, they are no Avengers, but they can definitely hold their own against major enemies. With Quill now having lost all his Celestial power, and Gamora not being a part of this team after the events of Avengers: Endgame, this superhero team has become weak. However, things will even out, because Thor has now been added to their team.
So, why did the writers want Thor to be a part of this team? The reason is Adam Warlock. This Golden Butterfly that Ayesha had created will surely come into play in the future of Guardians of the Galaxy. The mid-credits scene of the movie, GOTG Vol. 2 pitted Warlock against the Guardians before he actually turns into a superhero. If he goes to take on this team, then they will need someone super strong to take him on.
The core of the Guardians has been depleted, and the Asgardian God of Thunder is a huge powerhouse for Adam Warlock. All the fans would love to see Thor V Warlock on the silver screen. With Thor at the side of the Guardians, this team will become pretty formidable.
So, we have the Warlock set up from Vol. 2, but we have a statement from the past from James Gunn, which indicates that Adam Warlock might not even be in Vol. 3. The tweet from MCU leaker, Roger Wardell supports what Gunn had said:
Whatever the scooper has predicted has come true, so he has a lot of insider information that has led him to Marvel’s secrets. The tweet does not point to the entry of Adam Warlock at all.
All of this actually points to the very fact that there may be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 with Adam Warlock and Thor, and perhaps the Ravagers’ team which is led by Sylvester Stallone’s Starhawk. However, since there is a Thor 4 movie, this may also be in play, and Thor might have an opponent in Vol. 3 and that will not Adam Warlock.
This is the statement that James Gunn had given when he had been rehired:
“I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months. I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be. I deeply appreciate Disney’s decision, and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. I have been, and continue to be incredibly humbled by your love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Love to you all.”
