She was born on 22^nd August 1963 in Newton, North Carolina. Her parents are Edison McKinley Amos and Mary Ellen. Her family moved to Maryland when she was two. By the age of three, she started composing her songs and at the age of 5, she was admitted to Peabody Conservatory of Music where she studied classical piano and became the youngest student ever to admit to the institute.

In her teens, she had a stock of homemade demo tapes that was heard by a producer. In 1984, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career in music. Two years later, she formed a musical group, Y Kant Tori Read and the band released their self-titled album, Y Kant Tori Read in 1988 but it was commercially unsuccessful and this resulted in the group’s disbanding. Then, she signed a contract with Atlantic Records and released her solo debut album, Little Earthquakes in 1992. The following year, she released her second album, Under the Pink. Her third album, Boys for Pele ranked number 2 on the Billboard 200. In 2001, she released her concept album, Strange Little Girls. In 2008, Tori released a live album and DVD, Live at Montreux 1991/1992. In 2011, she released her first classical-style album, Night of Hunters to pay tribute to many composers. In 2012, on the occasion of the 20^th Anniversary of her debut album, she released an album of songs, Gold Dust. In 2017, she released the album, Native Invader and arranged a world tour to promote it. Her notable singles are Silent All These Years, Professional Widow, Flavor, Crucify, Caught a Lite Sneeze, A Sorta Fairytale, and many more.

In 1998, she got married to sound engineer Mark Hawley with whom she has a daughter.
